Here at McNeelyLaw, we truly value our law clerks and love having them as part of our team, especially Addison! From her legal research skills to her enthusiasm for learning, she brings so much to the firm. We had a great time getting to know more about her journey, what inspires her, and some fun facts along the way. Check out our Q&A with Addison to see why she’s such a valued part of our team!

Question 1: What inspired you to pursue a career in law?

Addison: A lot of people who seek legal help are doing so from a place of vulnerability. I want to pursue a career in law because I think it’s important that these clients get the support they need to navigate the legal system.

Question 2: What has been the most valuable lesson you’ve learned as a law clerk so far?

Addison: Check, double check, and triple check everything. It’s so important to make sure that your understanding of a case or statute reflects what the law actually says. Working in a firm has really put in perspective for me how important it is to dig for a deeper understanding of the law because that’s what clients are relying on.

Question 3: What area of law interests you the most, and why?

Addison: I think that I’ll feel most fulfilled with a career in civil and criminal litigation and of course I hope to be the best litigator I can be. The thought of exchanging moves with opposing counsel to try to come up with the best argument that you can for your client is very exciting to me.

Question 4: What’s a typical day like for you at McNeelyLaw?

Addison: Since I’m in law school right now I’m only in the office about two days a week. Most days I spend the bulk of my time doing legal research, which consists of reading and analyzing tons of case law and providing those findings to our attorneys. The law clerks and some of the attorneys have lunch together almost every day and I really enjoy that. I also help draft court documents, which is super cool because it’s great hands-on experience.

Question 5: What do you enjoy most about working with our team?

Addison: The attorneys at McNeely are so supportive of all of us law clerks and that’s something I really value about the firm. I’m very thankful to work at a firm where I get the opportunity to try things and get constructive feedback. I can really tell that they want me to be successful in what I do.

Question 6: What are some of your favorite hobbies or things you enjoy doing outside of work?

Addison: I love to spend time outside when I can and I’m especially excited for warmer weather. Running is one of my favorite things to do. I finished my first marathon last year and that experience really solidified my love for the sport.

Question 7: If you could have dinner with any legal figure, past or present, who would it be and why?

Addison: It would be amazing to have dinner with Alexander Hamilton. I’m taking Constitutional Law this semester and I’d love to pick his brain about the expansion of government powers since the ratification of the Constitution. I also just watched Hamilton and I finally get the hype.

Question 8: What’s a fun fact about you that people might not know?

Addison: When I was in undergrad at Indiana University I was a lifeguard for international diving competitions!
