Attorney Spotlight: Mark McNeely

Mark McNeely received his B.A. from Franklin College in Indiana. After graduating from Franklin College, Mark served in the United States Army and then attended Indiana University’s School of Law in Indianapolis. He received his juris doctor in 1973 and was admitted to the Indiana bar in 1974.

After joining the bar, Mark settled in Shelbyville, Indiana where he has practiced ever since. Mark has served in Shelby County as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney, Deputy State Public Defender, and a Public Defender. He also served as an attorney for the Department of Public Welfare from 1976 to 1985. From 1978 to 1990, Mark served as a Director for the State Public Defender’s Counsel, being elevated to serve as president of that council in 1988. He has also served as Director of the Indiana Legal Services Organization. Having served the public almost exclusively for close to two decades, Mark stepped into private practice as a solo practitioner until joining McNeelyLaw in 2020 with his brother, Lee.

Mark focuses his practice on criminal defense, bankruptcy, family law, and elder law. He has also continued his public service by representing a variety of Shelby County governmental bodies, as well as the town of Morristown. In addition to practicing in Indiana state courts, Mark also practices before the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana and the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Indiana. Mark is a father of four and grandfather of five, and his love of family strongly informs his practice of law and drive for public service.

Mark is a member of the American Bar Association, Indianapolis Bar Association, Shelby County Bar Association, and Indiana State Bar Association, and has served as a member of the Board of Governors of the latter. He serves on the Indiana Continuing Legal Education Forum (ICLEF), serving two years as that organization’s president, and the Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Mark has also served as president of the Shelbyville Redevelopment Commission, Shelby Core LLP, and the Franklin College Alumni Council.

Mark McNeely has been recognized as a Shelby County Best Attorney each year since 2011. In 2011, he was awarded the Indiana Bar Foundation President’s Award for Outstanding Support of the Legal Profession. In 2012, Mark received the ICLEF Blood and Guts Award, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities in 2006, and he has been recognized by Who’s Who in the World every year since 1990. Mark has dedicated his life to serving the public and the legal profession, and he carries that dedication over to every client that he represents today.
